The Old Gray Mare | Free Sheet Music for Easy Piano Solo

October 15, 2013

History

Authors suggest that The Old Gray Mare is based upon the performance of Lady Suffolk, the first horse recorded as trotting a mile in less than two and a half minutes. It is most likely, however, that the song originated as a nineteenth century campaign ditty which was composed as an epithet of Baltimore mayor Ferdinand Latrobe by the Democratic Party political operative/appointee Thomas Francis McNulty.

Lyrics

The old gray mare,
She ain’t what she used to be
Ain’t what she used to be,
Ain’t what she used to be
The old gray mare,
She ain’t what she used to be
Many long years ago.
