If you have a little girl (or have been around any of them lately), then you’ve probably seen or at least heard of Moana. The 2016 Disney musical adventure certainly made a huge splash in the world of movies the year it was released. The 3D animated feature film set the industry and the whole internet abuzz with its super catchy tunes and lovable characters like Moana, Maui, Grandma Tala, Pua (the pig) and Heihei (the rooster). It also made waves in the international community because many people appreciated Disney’s attempt to incorporate more body positivity and racial diversity into their group of Disney princesses.
The for soundtrack How Far I’ll Go is definitely one of the greatest things about the film. The piece was composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda and sung by Auliʻi Cravalho in the movie. Up-and-coming Canadian singer Alessia Cara also performed a version of it for the soundtrack album, which became a big hit in Billboards all over the world.
The song perfectly encapsulates the struggles that a person goes through in finding their identity, especially during their teenage years. It talks about how hard it can be to choose between listening to what the people around you are saying versus listening to the voice inside you. Many people have found the theme of the song to be highly relatable and timely. How Far I’ll Go has been well-received by the audiences and critics alike and was nominated for both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song in that same year.
