Pat-a-pan is a French Burgundian Christmas Carol. The carol was written by Bernard de La Monnoye (1641–1728) and first published in 1720. The carol centers on the birth of Jesus Christ. The phrase “pat-a-pan” is meant to represent the sound of a drum. The accompanying lyric, “tu-re-lu-re-lu,” is meant to represent the flute. “The Little Drummer Boy”, takes the same compositional approach with its chorus of “pa-rum-pa-pum-pum” representing the sound of a drum.

Lyrics
Willie, bring your little drum;
Robin, bring your flute and come;
And be merry while you play,
Tu-re-lu-re-lu,
Pat-a-pat-a-pan,
Come be merry while you play,
On this joyous Christmas day!
