About Amazing Grace

“Amazing Grace” is a very famous and beloved Christian song that has been around for a long time. The lyrics talk about how God’s grace, or kindness, is truly amazing.

The main story the song tells is about a person who used to be lost and do bad things, but then was saved by God’s grace. The lyrics say this person was “blind” but now they “see” – meaning they couldn’t understand God’s love before, but now they do. The song expresses how this person is grateful and thankful that God forgave them and helped them change their ways. It talks about how God’s grace has “brought them safe thus far” and will “lead them home” to heaven.

The original biblical verse comes from 1 Chronicles 17:16-17, where King David expresses his awe and gratitude to God for choosing him and his kingdom. The lines “I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see” capture the transformation David experienced through God’s grace and mercy.

Lyrics of Amazing Grace

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found
Was blind but now I see.

‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear
And grace my fears relieved.
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.

Through many dangers, toils and snares
I have already come.
‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far
And grace will lead me home.

How sweet the name of Jesus sounds
In a believer’s ear.
It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds
And drives away his fear.

Must Jesus bear the cross alone
And all the world go free?
No, there’s a cross for ev’ryone
And there’s a cross for me.
